the big duck

located on route 24 on the northern end of long island, new york, in flanders, you will find the big duck. after visiting lucy the elephant, i figured why not add a giant duck to my 'animals you can walk through' repertoire? yes, it's a duck and yes it's pretty big. it actually has a souvenier shop located inside, but it was closed by the time i arrived to the location...thanks traffic. it's only open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. i can't lie, i was more than a little disappointed i couldn't enter. i really wanted a big duck key chain if for nothing but the irony.

it was originally built in 1931 by duck farmer, martin maurer, in nearby riverhead with the intention of being used as a shop to sell...you guessed it...duck eggs. in 1997 it was added to the national register of historic places.

on the day of my visit there was a sign out front telling of the rubber duck races coming up in the next week. i can't believe i was actually too early for something. usually i am too late. go figure. anyway, if you're ever on long island and have a little time to kill, check out the big duck, it's worth a look-see. make sure you stop by my facebook and instagram pages for more fun photos of the big duck. any info or questions...drop me a line! on to my next adventure...
