mcmansion (literally)

2045 jericho turnpike in new hyde park on longe island, ny. we've all heard the term 'mcmansion' right? well this mcdonald's takes the term literally. it's a mcdonald's. built inside of a mansion. i kid you not. the building was originally a farm house for the family of joseph denton in 1795. in the 1860's it was converted into a georgian-style mansion. after world war I, the house became a funeral home and a series of restaurants. mcdonald's acquired the dilapitated property in 1985 with the intention of demolishing it and building a standard 'mcdonald's' structure. the residents of the new hyde park community successfully sought historic designation (the orignal owners were decendents of richard denton, one of the town founders) and mcdonald's agreed to restore it to it's 1926 appearance. there's a sign above the door and of course, the golden arches out front, but other than that, you would drive right by this beauty never realizing what it holds inside. inside, it basically has your typical micky d's appearance, with the execption of the grand stair case leading to the second floor dining area (which was closed when i was there, bummer!) stop in, grab some fries and a dollar sweet tea...you'll definitely be 'lovin it'.
