wheaton's plastics is an abandoned factory located on mill street in mays landing, nj. the site was first a cotton mill in the 1800's and after closing in 1949 (causing a steep incline in unemployment in the area) it reopened a year later as a plastic bottling plant. the plant closed it's doors for good in the 1990's and suffered a fire in 2007 which was caused by ongoing construction on the property that was intended to turn it into condominiums. since then, some of the more damaged buildings have been demolished, but any type of new construction or renovation seems to have ceased. so there it sits, all gloomy and loney on the water front right on main street in the middle of down town mays landing. people walking by, paying it almost no attention, and she surely is begging for it. look at me! (keep in mind that this is private property and is completely fenced off. i made no attempt to enter any of the buildings as they are in shambles and can be quite dangerous...for your health and also your criminal record...and i am interested in keeping both clean, so enter, i did not.) you can get a good close up look even without actually stepping foot on the property. she sits right on the road, you can park in the parking lot right out front and no one will bother you, unless you are up to no good, of course. i parked out front, waved a friendly hello to the police officer sitting there and wandered up and down the sidewalks on both sides. you can get a great view of it from across the water by crossing over the small bridge facing the dam. maybe someday the old girl will live again...
