3.5 miles, just outside of mays landing, nj lays the abandoned site of the estellville glassworks. they are located within the atlantic county park in estell manor on the east side of route 50. this is where you will find the rememnants of an early 19th century glass factory that was in operation from 1826-1877. the factory was built by by john h. scott for the estell family and began production in 1826. the factory was owned by the estell family until 1858 and had numerous owners following up until it's closing in 1877. general erosion, vandalism, and acid rain were the main factors in leading to the decision to save what is left and in 1995 the area went under a stabilization to preserve it. there are now sidewalks and informative signs to provide you with ease of visiting and information.
finding this site is pretty easy. just plug in atlantic county estell manor park into your gps system and away you go. once you reach the park, you can park in the lot by the nature center right in the front, or if you are feeling more adventurous...ie: feel like walking...or you can actually drive to the site and park there. it's located right on the side of the 2 mile road that winds through the park, just across from the first picnic area you come to, there is ample parking so don't just park on the side of the road, there's no need. the only advice i have for you is, hop out and explore. there are many things to see, along with other abandoned sites in the area and you will only get the full experience by getting out of your car and walking. don't be afraid to go off the beaten path, it's a park, they encourage it here. just don't go climbing on any of the buildings or removing any rocks (or anything else, for that matter). leave it just as you found it for someone else to enjoy. take your time, read what you can and breath in the fresh air. this site is just one of many abandoned buildings in this general vicinity. roaming through the woods you will find others, including old family cemeteries (cemeteries are my favorite!). so get out and walk! you never know what you are missing! just an fyi, though...the 'pot house' is absolutely not what i thought it was going to be. still interesting, though!
