abandoned railroad tracks unearthed on sunset beach

railroad tracks_edited.jpg

you may remember that i have already been to sunset beach at cape may point, new jersey. this is the location of the s.s. atlantus. according to local reports, in early november 2014 about a hundred feet of abandoned railroad tracks was unearthed from a recent storm. i had to see it for myself. i drove to sunset beach, parked near the s.s. atlantus, walked onto the beach and wondered 'okay, where is it?' luckily for me, it was a pretty popular place that day. i looked to my right and saw a small crowd formed a short way down (okay, i won't lie, it was a little further than i expected to walk in the wind and cold...but the sun was shining, so there's that). i followed the crowd and there i found it. apparently, it has not been seen by human eyes in over 80 years, long since been forgotten until now. local historians claim it to belong to a sand plant started shortly after the turn of the century, that scooped up sand and loaded into rail cars that traveled along the beach. i stood there looking at it thinking i would more than likely be the only zombie gnome, ever to set eyes upon it. gave me a big head. i walked along the tracks, careful not to actually step on anything but sand (unlike the lady with the bratty kids who were hopping from tie to tie...seriously lady, way to let your kids ruin it for future generations, sheesh!) feeling very small. i even found an old anchor embeded in the mud next to it. imagine what it may have belonged to?? i am not sure how long the tracks will remain visible, another storm may blow through and cover them again for another 80 years, so this may be your one and olny chance to view them for yourself. don't miss out, i didn't. on to my next adventure...
