fort miles

located within cape henlopen state park in lewes, delaware you will find the fort miles historical area. i didn't really get to poke around too much as i was waiting for a ferry and had to get back to the port before i missed it. during wwII, fort miles was a key piece in the nation's coastal defense. but the growing use of long-range misssles brought an end to harbor defenses in the united states by 1958. and in 1964, 543 acres of the base was returned to the state of delaware, forming the heart of henlopen state park. in 2005, fort miles was added to the national register of historic places. you will notice upon arriving that there is a wwII observation tower, much like the one found in cape may, new jersey. i didn't climb the one in cape may, but i did climb the one at fort miles. note to future self: never climb a wwII obervation tower the morning after a bender at seacrets. it was cold, windy, and considering i am afraid of heights, not such a great idea for me. it did offer a nice view of the base, though.

there are lots of buildings to explore, all are well kept, so don't be afraid to wander inside. there was a skate board rally going on while i was there, tons of angsty looking teens giving me the stink eye, so that was awesome. i wasn't able to wander down to the beach in this area, thanks to cranky skaters riding their death boards to and fro so i had to find an entrance to the beach elsewhere. on to my next adventure...
