located in wilkes-barre, pennsylvania, this abandoned train station was once listed on the list of historic land marks. but no more. wilkes-barre was a thriving coal mining community in it's day, but in the 1970's the mines shut down, and so did the railroad station. the station that shipped over a million tons of coal to new york, was lost to history and decay. it did see a bit of a come back as a cocktail bar, having it's cars be transformed into hotel rooms, a bar and even a dance floor, alas, it just couldn't hang on and has been succumbing to the elements ever since.
driving through town, if you blink, you might miss it. it is sitting on the side of the road adjacent to (what looks like) a semi abandoned strip mall, very sad and lonely. as i was poking around, i thought about venturing inside, but after being warned of transients perhaps residing there, i decided against it. no need to get into a scuffle with someone for intruding in their home space ("get outta my house!!" adventure's in babysitting? no? okay, then.) i didn't see any people, but there were lots of cats. lots and lots of cats.
be careful where you step, the place is seriously dilapitated and if walking in certain areas, you are most certainly sure to step through. from what i read, the inside of the place is amazing (or used to be) but as i said, no hobo fights for me thanks, i will just stick to looking around outside. google it, you will find some amazing photos that the more adventurous (and non fearful) people have uploaded. as i was getting ready to leave, a woman drove up and started feeding the cats. i walked over to say hi and she told me that she and another woman take turns feeding the poor feral things and they try to find homes for them. could she get any sweeter? i don't think so. on to my next adventure...
